Switched on the wrong way
Nintendo Switch Online app out now with its share of issues.
The Nintendo Switch Online app was released as a free download for iOS and Android devices, alongside the launch of Splatoon 2. It also happens to be an integral part to the Switch’s online voice chatting experience, but as it is, the hybrid console isn’t going to let gamers enjoy the experience properly.
The app was supposed to go live alongside Splatoon 2, but was made available a couple of days earlier. It didn’t work properly back then, with users reporting that they were unable to log into their Nintendo account. Fast forward to the app’s of cial launch day, Switch owners were then treated to a slew of other issues that suggested Nintendo didn’t quite grasp the way voice chat works.
To start, only Splatoon 2 works with the app at the moment. The problem truly begins when you’ve got both Splatoon 2 and the Nintendo Switch Online app running. Switch over to any other game on the console, and you’ll get disconnected. The same applies to the app – switch over to absolutely anything else, be it the phone app to answer a call or the browser to check on guides, and you’ll be disconnected. You even have to keep the screen turned on at all times, or the app will shut down when your phone goes to sleep mode. This, as you can imagine, is a massive drain on your phone’s battery reserves.
With other gaming services offering voice chat in very simple and intuitive ways, it’s puzzling to see Nintendo insisting on having so many unnecessary extras to get it working. It likely wouldn’t affect sales numbers of the Switch, but it’s still shocking that Nintendo intends to charge a subscription fee for something that is not only unnecessarily complicated, but also doesn’t work properly on day one.
