Transcend SSD230S (256GB)
It’s safe to say that when it comes to building a gaming rig, the average folks tend to disregard the importance of having a solid-state drive included in the equation. You might think that it makes perfect sense, since having terabytes worth of solidstate storage isn’t exactly going to improve the visual quality or frame rates of DOOM or Tom Clancy's Ghost Recon: Wildlands.
With that said, a solidstate drive, such as the Transcend SSD230S, would most certainly help your favorite games – and effectively your entire system – load up that much faster.
The SSD230S is a 2.5-inch SATA III SSD that uses 3D TLC NAND flash memory which, compared to 2D NAND memory, is able to contain higher storage capacities within the same amount of physical space, thanks to the vertically-stacked structure of the memory cells.
Also, the fact that its memory cells are stacked vertically means that it will be able to provide higher read/write speeds, increased reliability, lower power consumption, and better performance than its 2D NAND counterparts.
According to Transcend, the 256GB variant of the SSD230S is capable of achieving sequential read/write speeds of 560MB/s and 520MB/s, respectively. To find out whether this is indeed the case, we fired up CrystalDiskMark, and ran five test runs for both the 1GB and 4GB test sizes.
The results? The SSD230S managed to obtain a sequential read/write speed of 533.3MB/s and 495.5MB/s for the 1GB test size, and a sequential read/write speed of 546.2MB/s and 495.3MB/s for the 4GB test size – pretty darn close to the official numbers from Transcend.
To gauge the real-world performance of the SSD230S, we timed how long it took to complete a file transfer – specifically one that involved transferring the entire 67GB Steam installation folder of DOOM, which contained 428 files stashed within 71 folders.
The file transfer process took no more than two minutes and 17 seconds to complete. Crunch the numbers, and you’ll end up with an average transfer speed of about 489MB/s. We should probably point out that the file was transferred from the

The actual read/write speeds of the SSD230S is almost exactly as advertised.
