LIAM, through its In­surans Hayat Cares com­mu­nity ser­vice plat­form and in col­lab­o­ra­tion with CARIF and the Malaysian In­sur­ance In­sti­tute re­cently or­gan­ised a Can­cer Talk for the in­sur­ance and taka­ful in­dus­try as well as the gen­eral public. Two distin­guished speak­ers in the field of can­cer, Pro­fes­sor Dr. Teo Soo Hwang, Chief Ex­ec­u­tive of CARIF and Dr. Eni Ju­raida Ab­dul Rah­man, Con­sul­tant Pae­di­a­tri­cian of the On­col­ogy Ward, Hos­pi­tal Kuala Lumpur gave in­sight­ful pre­sen­ta­tions and shared their knowl­edge and valu­able in­for­ma­tion about can­cer to ap­prox­i­mately 60 par­tic­i­pants at the MII City Cen­tre, Wisma Sime Darby Kuala Lumpur. The Chair­man of In­dus­try Pro­mo­tion Com­mit­tee, Mr Ramzi Toubassy in his welcome re­marks praised the sup­port of the in­dus­try to­wards such an ac­tiv­ity and hope that more of such talks would be or­gan­ised in the fu­ture to in­crease aware­ness among the peo­ple. “It is im­por­tant that we all get ed­u­cated all the time about our health. Know­ing what to do and how to live a healthy life must be ev­ery­one’s top pri­or­ity,” he said. Through the topic, ‘Can­cer is Not Just Bad Luck, De­spite What the Head­lines Say’, Pro­fes­sor Dr. Teo shared the world’s over­view of can­cer, history of can­cer ge­net­ics as well as can­cer sta­tis­tics in Malaysia. She also high­lighted a num­ber of cases in­clud­ing fa­mous Hol­ly­wood ac­tress An­gelina Jolie’s story, who went into surgery af­ter doc­tors de­tected pos­si­ble signs of early can­cer in her. Mean­while, Dr. Eni Ju­raida who talked on ‘Grow­ing Up in the Shad­ows of Can­cer’ shared her story on deal­ing with par­ents of chil­dren with can­cer. Hav­ing more than 20 years’ ex­pe­ri­ence, she wit­nessed many can­cer sur­vivors lead­ing a nor­mal life af­ter suc­cess­ful treat­ments, who can be a source of in­spi­ra­tion to oth­ers. Dr. Eni also high­lighted that can­cer among chil­dren is cur­able and par­ents should not lose hope in get­ting the best treat­ment for their chil­dren.
