The Lat­vian Song and Dance Fes­ti­val (Lat­vian Visp am­a­teur choral events i n the world and an i mpor­tant event i n Lat­vian cul­ture and so­cial life. It is also a Mas­ter­piece of the Oral and In­tan­gi­ble Her­itage of Hu­man­ity. The All-Lat­vian Song and Dance Fes­ti­val has been held since 1873, nor­mally ev­ery five years. This i s one of the l argest song and dance fes­ti­vals i n the world choir singers and con­duc­tors celebri­ties. Usu­ally only folk­songs and clas­si­cal choir songs are sung, with em­pha­sis on a cap­pella singing, but re­cently mod­ern pop­u­lar songs have been in­cor­po­rated into the reper­toire. They are not short of songs in Latvia, they have one of the largest col­lec­tions of tra­di­tional folk songs i n the world, num­ber­ing over 300,000. While other coun­tries sing: Ac­cord­ing to the au­thor­i­ties, it i s not as much as the Lat­vians do. The coun­try is a self-pro­claimed singing na­tion.
