Long acknowledged as Malaysia’s #1 restaurant, it is a French-Japanese fine dining restaurant tucked inside the Micasa Hotel, near the American embassy. It has been listed on the Miele Guide Asia’s Top 20 restaurants for a number of years and it has an amazingly devoted legion of local admirers. The ambience at Cilantro is subtly classy, without any unnecessary grandiose, pretentious decor. The wait staff is impeccably trained and knows the dishes inside-out, in addition to being extremely helpful and friendly. Chef Takashi Kimura obviously has Japanese roots, but he was trained in France. He is widely recognized for having achieved in Malaysia what nobody else in Malaysia has been able to do so far; making a restaurant in Malaysia one of the best in Asia. His dishes are a fusion of French and Japanese cuisines, but he includes local ingredients to the extent of giving everything a touch of localness. Cilantro is not the liveliest restaurant around, with its dim-lighting and serious allure; it is the kind of place where conversation takes place in soft tones.
