Long ac­knowl­edged as Malaysia’s #1 restau­rant, it is a French-Ja­panese fine din­ing restau­rant tucked in­side the Mi­casa Ho­tel, near the Amer­i­can em­bassy. It has been listed on the Miele Guide Asia’s Top 20 restau­rants for a num­ber of years and it has an amaz­ingly de­voted le­gion of lo­cal ad­mir­ers. The am­bi­ence at Cilantro is sub­tly classy, with­out any un­nec­es­sary grandiose, pre­ten­tious decor. The wait staff is im­pec­ca­bly trained and knows the dishes in­side-out, in ad­di­tion to be­ing ex­tremely help­ful and friendly. Chef Takashi Kimura ob­vi­ously has Ja­panese roots, but he was trained in France. He is widely rec­og­nized for hav­ing achieved in Malaysia what no­body else in Malaysia has been able to do so far; mak­ing a restau­rant in Malaysia one of the best in Asia. His dishes are a fu­sion of French and Ja­panese cuisines, but he in­cludes lo­cal in­gre­di­ents to the ex­tent of giv­ing ev­ery­thing a touch of lo­cal­ness. Cilantro is not the liveli­est restau­rant around, with its dim-light­ing and se­ri­ous al­lure; it is the kind of place where con­ver­sa­tion takes place in soft tones.
