An un­ex­pected wed­ding gift from Christyl Chin to Lim Choon Leng, a back­drop of ver­dant cherry blos­soms in pink and white set the tone for a ro­man­tic soiree

hey share a taste for travel and fine spir­its so a friend thought they might hit it off, but it was hardly an in­stant con­nec­tion for Lim Choon Leng and Christyl Chin. On their first meet­ing at a so­cial gath­er­ing in a whisky bar in 2014, Christyl was taken aback when Choon Leng asked why she was sin­gle. She re­calls with amuse­ment, “The meet­ing ended up as a com­plete dis­as­ter!”

How­ever, she agreed to another meet­ing and the sec­ond time re­ally was the charm for this pair. Af­ter an in­tense one-year courtship, Choon Leng joked about how the calan­ques in Mar­seilles would make a pic­turesque back­drop for a pro­posal. Christyl could have sus­pected he was up to some­thing as they were plan­ning a trip there. But three weeks be­fore that, dur­ing a very spe­cial mo­ment on their hol­i­day in Taipei, he sur­prised her when he asked for her hand in mar­riage.

This mod­ern cou­ple al­ways en­vi­sioned an in­ti­mate do with just their close fam­ily mem­bers and friends, but de­cided to do things the tra­di­tional Chi­nese way to show re­spect to Choon Leng’s par­ents. A grand eight-course din­ner ban­quet was held at The Four Sea­sons Sin­ga­pore; how­ever, it wasn’t just the much raved-about Chi­nese cui­sine from Jiang Nan
