Ready, Set, Go!
Tania Jayatilaka speaks to four society ladies to uncover the ‘dirty’ details of their most memorable gatecrashing games, from the crazy, to the creative and the wildly comical
Discover some interesting facts and exciting games to play for your ‘gatecrashing’ ceremony
ANGELYN CHONG & MAH KOK WAH
Here’s what Mah Kok Wah and his oh-so-dapper groomsmen were subjected to when the troop descended upon the bride’s home early that morning: they each had to leap through a hula hoop hanging from the ceiling in order to enter the house. “We made them think for a bit—they had to come up with creative ways to help each other through the hoop and decide who should go first and who should be last,” recalls Angelyn. Being an avid fan of TV shows like Running Man and other Chinese variety shows, Angelyn and her bridesmaids devoted several meetings just to throw out ideas for the gatecrashing games.
JADY TEOH & BRIAN CHOO
After a night of brainstorming, food and wine, Jady Teoh and her bridesmaids came up with the ideal set of games to suit both her and Brian’s big group of friends. “We wanted all of them to be part of our big day, so we made them compete against one another. The boys were split into four groups and the team that lost had to stay for the more challenging (read: worst) game,” Jady shared. The highlight of the games was when Brian got through all the challenges only to fetch the wrong bride! “Everyone laughed to tears! A male friend of mine was dressed up in the Chinese Kua with makeup on. Brian was blindfolded and was told to feel the bride, except this one was much sexier than the real bride!”
JUVENE GOH & MARCUS TEO
Inspired by television shows like Fear Factor and Minute To Win It, Juvene Goh and her bridesmaids had an unforgettable surprise in store for the groom and his heng dais. Aptly named ‘The Fear Factor Blind Search’, the groomsmen were presented with three different boxes filled with various items, like worms, jelly bugs, and live hamsters. The challenge? They had to stick their hands in the boxes (unaware of the contents of each) and search for alphabets that spelled out the bridesmaids’ names in order to advance. “The squeals from those supposedly ‘manly gladiators’ made it memorable and fun!” adds Juvene. The groomsmen eventually survived the round, and so did the hamsters, who eventually became the household pets.
LIM MAY JIAN & KAVEH WONG
“My gatecrashing was inspired by the movie Suicide Squad, and my girlfriends dressed in tailored costumes as Harley Quinn,” says May Jian. One of her personal favourite challenges of the day was Russian Roulette, in which her sister and maid of honour May Shen custom-made a giant dice with punishments printed on each side, hidden beneath flaps. The groomsmen would roll the dice and wait in suspense, eventually having to perform the punishment written on the upward face of the dice. In another game, the blindfolded groomsmen had to use their feet to fish out the keys to May Jian’s room from a large tub—easier said than done, as that tub contained live worms mixed in gooey green slime!
