Just as birthdays call for lav­ish ban­quets and special mile­stones call for bot­tles of sparkling, Patek Philippe’s Grand Ex­hi­bi­tion was marked with ma­te­rial pomp and grandeur: the mai­son man­u­fac­tured nine special edi­tion watches for both men and women, as well as 17 rare hand­crafts— dome ta­ble clocks, pocket watches, and wrist­watches—that pay homage to the United States and New York in par­tic­u­lar. The un­veil­ing of the Ref 5531R World Time Minute Re­peater, for starters, was a rev­o­lu­tion­ary mo­ment for Swiss watch­mak­ing as a whole. A marvel of a com­pli­ca­tion, the minute re­peater was first for­mu­lated dur­ing darker days, be­fore the ad­vent of elec­tric­ity, to en­able wear­ers to tell the time come sun­down.
