Aveda introduced “eclipting” in 2016, a hair colour innovation brought about by last year’s contouring craze. The brand’s Global Artistic Director, Michael Black, coined this faceflattering technique, which involves colouring the whole head with a darker base before incorporating highlights in specific sections to add depth to the hair, as well as to contour the face. The darker hair at the roots around the face gives the appearance of a slimmer jawline, and highlights make the hair look more textured and voluminous. Contrasting colours are customised for each individual based on his/her features and undertones. While balayage gives a more natural and subtle gradient effect, eclipting creates a more obvious contrast for added impact. According to Michael, “Colour can also be used to offset the density of your hair. If it’s thin, for example, layering a deeper colour underneath can create the illusion of fullness.
