“Addisu, an Ethiopian priest, married Destaye when she was 11. He let her stay at her parents for a while, and she went to school even after she moved in with him. When she had her first child at 15, she did not have access to medical care and she hemorrhaeged a lot during their child’s delivery. Addisu was shocked and worried— he was seeing child marriage repercussions first hand. He’s become an elder in the community, and is now saying that he should not have married a girl so young. The community is slowly changing with him. This is an example of how change can happen.”
