Race Against TIME
50 years after the Ford GT40’s legendary first win at Le Mans 24 hours, Tag Heuer honours the legends with this masterpiece.
It was a fine summer’s day in 1968 when the 24-hours of Le Mans took place under very controversial conditions. The race was held particularly late in the year as opposed to the usual mid-summer June event due to the civil unrest in France. Ferrari had pulled out in protest of the three-litre regulation, leaving Ford and Porsche to battle for the top step of the podium. Ford jumped at the chance, deploying their distinctive light blue and orange liveried Ford GT40, backed by Gulf Oil. Porsche, the veteran in the racing category, were the top favourite of the race, but nobody expected the Ford GT40, driven by Pedro Rodriguez and Lucien Bianchi, to defy the odds and win the race.
The legendary win cemented the Gulf Oil-liveried Ford GT40 into racing history and now, 50 years later, Tag Heuer is commemorating the legendary win with the Tag Heuer Formula 1 Gulf Special Edition timepiece. The watch features the Gulf Oil logo etched onto the back of the case, while the steel case is paired with a finely-crafted blue leather strap with orange stitching to match the Gulf Oil colours.
