CLEAN EAT­ING’S DIRTY TRUTH

Con­fused about what makes a food “clean”? We don’t blame you. None of the “clean” food prod­ucts stud­ied by the Cen­ter for Science in the Pub­lic In­ter­est re­duced added sug­ars, which means that clean foods aren’t al­ways the best for you calo­rie-wise.

GO FOR THE WHOLE

Your stom­ach may have a palate. Peo­ple who ate whole grains had health­ier gut bac­te­ria than those who ate half that amount of re­fined grains, a study in the Amer­i­can Jour­nal of Clin­i­cal Nu­tri­tion found. Pick prod­ucts that list whole grains first.

KEEP EGGING ON

Huevo haters, stand down: eggs have lots of nu­tri­ents that may shield you from cog­ni­tive de­cline, sci­en­tists in Fin­land re­port. Peo­ple with the high­est in­take (about an egg a day) were less likely to de­velop de­men­tia or Alzheimer’s than those with the low­est.
