AMAN was beaten to death in a fight that started after he hurled a pipe at a barking dog at a squatter colony here on Tuesday.

The man was beaten up by the owner of the dog as the pipe that was meant for the dog had instead struck his children in the 8.30am incident.

A neighbour, who saw the commotion, lodged a report and claimed the dog owner was armed with an iron rod, while the victim, a plastic pipe.

Around noon the same day, police arrested a 30-year-old man outside a nearby restaurant and recovered a 90cm rod, believed to be the murder weapon.

District police chief Assistant Commissioner Mohd Azhar Hamin said the case was classified as murder.

Azhar said the 8.30am incident took place at the colony near Taman Mutiara here.

The man, infuriated by the barking dog, hurled an iron pipe at it, but had instead hit two children.

A fight ensued between the victim, whom police believe was drunk, and the suspect, who is the dog owner and father of the children.

“A neighbour, who filed the report, saw the suspect using an iron pipe, while the victim, a plastic pipe, in the fight,” he said.

Azhar said the suspect fled the scene with his children before he was arrested at 1.25pm.

“The unidentified victim was pronounced dead at the scene and the body was sent to the Duchess of Kent hospital for post-mortem.
