SHAH ALAM: Some four million eligible Malaysians have yet to register to vote.

The Election Commission (EC) found that the majority of them were from the younger generation.

EC chairman Datuk Seri Mohd Hashim Abdullah said the trend was worrying as the number was big, with total number of eligible voters at around 18 million.

“There are about 18 million Malaysians, aged 21 and above, who are eligible to vote.

“But, the latest figure on the electoral roll shows only 14 million voters.

“This figure is worrying as it is a huge number.

“Most of them are from the younger generation,” Hashim said after attending the launch of Voters Registration Campaign here yesterday.

Present were AirAsia X chief executive officer Benyamin Ismail and Karangkraf Media Group chairman Datuk Dr Hussamuddin Yaacub.

On the commission’s preparations to handle the 14th General Election, Hashim said EC was ready should the event be held this year.

“EC is always ready as it is our job to handle elections. So, we will do our best.”
