Cops hunting suspect who shot Sikh
Police in a Seattle suburb were looking for a gunman on Saturday, who shot a Sikh man in the arm and told him to “go back to your own country”. the Seattle Times reported.
India’s foreign minister said on Twitter yesterday the victim’s name was Deep Rai, who told police that he was working in his driveway on Friday when the man came up to him.
“I am sorry to know about the attack on Deep Rai, a US national of Indian origin.
“I have spoken to Sardar Harpal Singh, father of the victim,” said Foreign Minister Sushma Swaraj.
Rai told police in the Seattle suburb here that the shooter was 1.8m tall, white and had a stocky build. He said the man was wearing a mask over the lower half of his face.
Police told the newspaper that the agency has contacted the FBI and other law enforcement agencies about the incident.
Jasmit Singh, a leader of the local Sikh community, said he was told that Rai had been released from hospital.
“He is just very shaken up, both him and his family. We’re all at a loss in terms of what’s going on right now.
“This is just bringing it home. The climate of hate that has been created doesn’t distinguish between anyone.”
