ROHM-Wako aims to ac­count for 20pc of world pro­duc­tion

Diode pro­ducer ROHM-Wako Elec­tron­ics (M) Sdn Bhd aims to ac­count for up to 20 per cent of the world’s diode pro­duc­tion, said Pres­i­dent Yuk­i­hiro Tak­izawa.

He said the tar­get was achiev­able with the new RM270 mil­lion build­ing at the com­pany’s fac­tory at Pengkalan Chepa In­dus­trial Area II, here, which would start op­er­at­ing at the end of this month.

Yuk­i­hiro said the con­struc­tion of the new fac­tory build­ing, which started in 2015, cost RM600 mil­lion, in­clud­ing RM330 mil­lion for high-tech­nol­ogy equip­ment.

“We are pro­duc­ing 700 mil­lion diodes an­nu­ally, mak­ing up 15 per cent of the world’s pro­duc­tion.

“We es­ti­mate pro­duc­tion to in­crease by five per cent to 1.3 bil­lion diodes with the fac­tory’s new build­ing,” he said yes­ter­day.

Ke­lan­tan Men­teri Be­sar Datuk Ah­mad Yakob of­fi­ci­ated the open­ing of the new build­ing.

Present were In­ter­na­tional Trade and In­dus­try Minister Datuk Seri Mustapa Mo­hamed, ROHM-Wako Elec­tron­ics (Malaysia) Sdn Bhd hon­orary chair­man Datuk Ya­suke Yosh­ioka, Ja­pan’s am­bas­sador to Malaysia Dr Makio Miya­gawa and Malaysian In­vest­ment De­vel­op­ment Au­thor­ity chief ex­ec­u­tive of­fi­cer Datuk Az­man Mah­mud.

Mustapa said the com­pany con­trib­uted to a 160 per cent in­crease in job op­por­tu­ni­ties to the lo­cal com­mu­nity, of­fer­ing 1,899 jobs com­pared with only 708 jobs when it first started in 1989.

He said ROHM-Wako was co­op­er­at­ing with 148 lo­cal sup­pli­ers, 70 of which were Ke­lan­tanese com­pa­nies, for the pro­duc­tion of the diodes.
