ROHM-Wako aims to account for 20pc of world production
Diode producer ROHM-Wako Electronics (M) Sdn Bhd aims to account for up to 20 per cent of the world’s diode production, said President Yukihiro Takizawa.
He said the target was achievable with the new RM270 million building at the company’s factory at Pengkalan Chepa Industrial Area II, here, which would start operating at the end of this month.
Yukihiro said the construction of the new factory building, which started in 2015, cost RM600 million, including RM330 million for high-technology equipment.
“We are producing 700 million diodes annually, making up 15 per cent of the world’s production.
“We estimate production to increase by five per cent to 1.3 billion diodes with the factory’s new building,” he said yesterday.
Kelantan Menteri Besar Datuk Ahmad Yakob officiated the opening of the new building.
Present were International Trade and Industry Minister Datuk Seri Mustapa Mohamed, ROHM-Wako Electronics (Malaysia) Sdn Bhd honorary chairman Datuk Yasuke Yoshioka, Japan’s ambassador to Malaysia Dr Makio Miyagawa and Malaysian Investment Development Authority chief executive officer Datuk Azman Mahmud.
Mustapa said the company contributed to a 160 per cent increase in job opportunities to the local community, offering 1,899 jobs compared with only 708 jobs when it first started in 1989.
He said ROHM-Wako was cooperating with 148 local suppliers, 70 of which were Kelantanese companies, for the production of the diodes.
