Torch Run in Manila

THE in­au­gu­ral Ris­ing To­gether Ba­ton Run in con­junc­tion with the Kuala Lumpur Sea Games and Asean Para Games (KL2017) will con­tinue in Manila, Philip­pines to­mor­row.

Fol­low­ing the first run in Brunei last week, the ba­ton was passed to the Am­bas­sador of the Philip­pines to Brunei, Mey­nardo LB Mon­teale­gre in a sym­bolic han­dover.

Prior to the first run, the ba­ton was handed to the pres­i­dent of the Brunei Darus­salam Na­tional Olympic Coun­cil, Prince Sufri Bolkiah by Sports Min­is­ter Khairy Ja­malud­din.

The Ris­ing To­gether Ba­ton Run in Manila will be flagged off at the Mala­canang Palace and will cover a 7.2km route.

The run is sched­uled to pass iconic places like Luneta, Ra­jah Su­lay­man Park and the Rizal Memo­rial Sports Com­plex.

Weightlifter Hidi­lyn Diaz, sil­ver medal­list at the 2016 Rio Olympics, will lead the run.

The Malaysian del­e­ga­tion to Manila will be led by Khairy and ac­com­pa­nied by the deputy sec­re­tary gen­eral of the Sports Min­istry, Nik Abd Kadir Nik Mo­ham­mad and the chief op­er­at­ing of­fi­cer of the Malaysian Sea Games Or­gan­is­ing Com­mit­tee (MASOC) Shai­ful Zahrin Sub­han.

The han­dover of the ba­ton to the next host coun­try, Laos, will take place at the end of the run in Manila.

Af­ter Laos (March 18), the run will move on to Myanmar (March 25).

The 29th edi­tion of the Sea Games will be on Aug 19-31 fol­lowed by the 9th Asean Para Games on Sept 17-23.
