48-year-old charged with as­sault

IPOH: A 48-year-old man was charged in the mag­is­trate’s court here yes­ter­day with caus­ing hurt to his for­mer girl­friend and us­ing crim­i­nal force on her.

Voon Chee Wai, 48, who was Perak Chi­nese Assem­bly Hall’s sec­re­tary, pleaded not guilty be­fore mag­is­trate Siti Hanum Mo­hamad Sah.

On the first count, Voon was al­leged to have vol­un­tar­ily caused hurt to Chang Yoke Yee, 42, in a room at Kinta River­front Ho­tel here at

2.45am on Dec 18.

If con­victed, he faces up to one year’s jail and a fine of up to RM2,000 un­der Sec­tion 323 of the Pe­nal Code.

On the sec­ond count, Voon was al­leged to have used crim­i­nal force on Chang by pulling her hand and forc­ing her into a lift at the ho­tel’s base­ment park­ing at 3.40am on Dec 18.

The charge un­der Sec­tion 352 of the Pe­nal Code car­ries a max­i­mum of three months’ jail and a fine of up to RM1,000.

Siti Hanum granted RM2,000 bail for each charge in one surety and fixed April 11 for men­tion.

Deputy pub­lic pros­e­cu­tor Sally Chai Mei Ling pros­e­cuted while Ran­jit Gill Singh rep­re­sented the ac­cused.
