A cracker on the cards
THE national Under-16 hockey tournament promises to be a sizzler with 14 boys’ and 13 girls’ teams set to do battle in Kuala Lumpur from tomorrow.
Only Perlis failed to send a team for the girls with full representation from the states for the boys event.
The tournaments will be played at the Kuala Lumpur HA and Education Ministry pitches in Jalan Pantai.
Last year’s tournament — held in Malacca — was a nine-a-side event but it will be a 11-a-side event this year.
Terengganu will be the defending the boys title while Selangor were the girls champions in 2016.
Sabah was initially the host of both vents, but a Malaysian Hockey Confederation (MHC) inspection team found their pitch- es and facilities not up to the mark and the MHC took over the host’s job.
“Both our girls and boys teams have been training for a month now, and hopefully the perform much better than last year,” said KLHA secretary V. Rajamanickam.
While the KL girls beat Malacca 3-0 for bronze, the KL boys finished ninth.
