‘I’M STILL FRIENDS WITH EX-BANDMATES’

Former Wings guitarist to focus on new band, DENNIS CHUA writes

-

FORMER Wings guitarist Abdul Zamin Abdul Kadir, or Joe, has confirmed that he is no longer in the quartet.

However, he declined to reveal whether he left Wings of his own accord or if his former bandmates — Datuk Ahmad Azhar Osman (Awie), Samsaidi Ulong Idris (Eddie) and Azmi Hashim (Black) — had made the decision for him.

“I’m still good friends with Awie, Eddie and Black. I’ll always be supportive of their musical projects. That’s why we decided not to reveal the reasons behind my ‘break’ with the band.

“Let the circumstances behind my departure from Wings be a private matter between the four of us,” he told the New Straits

Times recently in Jalan Tun Razak

here.

Joe said he was sad to leave his band, but it had come as a blessing in disguise since it allowed him to focus 100 per cent on the growth of Prime Domestic, a sixyear-old rock outfit, which he cofounded with former Search guitarist Hillary Ang in 2011.

“It’s too early to tell if I will return to Wings someday, as Awie did, but I’ll always be their fan and I wish them success in their upcoming concert Wings And Superfriends at Istana Budaya, Kuala Lumpur,” he said.

The concert, which aims to raise funds for the medical expenses of artistes such as Yazit of Search, also features Datuk Siti Nurhaliza, Datuk M. Nasir and Datuk Hattan.

It is organised by Awie Entertainment and tickets are priced at RM80 and RM350. For more information, call 019-293 2436/019-297 5260.

On Prime Domestic, Joe said it comprised drummer Ainoll Ramli, who was from Kristal, bassist Fauzi Zain (Search), and vocalist Aweera Norhisham, the second runner-up of ntv7’s One In A Million Season 3 in 2009.

Late last month, Awie said Joe was “pursuing his own activity”, with the approval of Wings members.

He said they respected his decision to take a break and hoped he would be back in Wings’ lineup someday.

Joe’s status in the band came under question shortly after Wings was supposed to hold its 30th anniversary concert, themed “Wings 30 Years Live”, at Likas Stadium in Kota Kinabalu, Sabah, last Dec 24, but which was postponed to January.

That set social media abuzz with talk that Joe was the cause of the postponement, and would be replaced by guest guitarist Edrie Hashim.

Joe was speaking at a press conference to announce his band Prime Domestic’s Sunday Night Live showcase slated for April 2 at House Restaurant, G Tower Hotel in Jalan Ampang, Kuala Lumpur.

Present were organising chairman Mike Cubinar, sponsor Laiyon’s chief executive officer, Jemizan Bakar, and its patron, Datuk Ed Sullaiman Ahmad.

The two-hour showcase, organised by Anggerik Event and House, will see the launch of Prime Domestic’s singles Sedingin Pluto and Satukan Impian.

Tickets are priced at RM50. For more information, call 0133212131 / 019-3681917 / 0126502352.
