“That’s why they can’t think what kind of de­fence I’m go­ing to present. They are scared be­cause they don’t know how to ar­gue.

“For me, be­rani ker­ana be­nar, takut ker­ana salah (be brave if you’re right, you will be scared if you’re wrong),” he said cit­ing a Malay proverb.

The de­bate was orig­i­nally sched­uled for last Satur­day when Dr Ma­hathir vis­ited Nazri’s par­lia­men­tary con­stituency of Padang Ren­gas in Perak. The po­lice, how­ever, re­jected an ap­pli­ca­tion for a per­mit to hold the event.

The idea arose after Dr Ma­hathir, who is chair­man of Parti Pribumi Ber­satu Malaysia, chal­lenged Nazri to a de­bate on po­lit­i­cal and eco­nomic is­sues.

Dr Ma­hathir cited top­ics such as 1Malaysia De­vel­op­ment Bhd and the Bu­mipu­tra Malaysia Fi­nance scan­dal.

Lo­cal daily Si­nar Har­ian as the or­gan­iser, has pro­posed to hold the de­bate in Shah Alam on April 7.
