Father of 7 charged with drug trafficking
KAMPAR: A father of seven, along with three family members, are facing the gallows for allegedly trafficking in 14.6kg of methamphetamine on March 13.
Kalitazan@Nur Azan Abdullah, 44, his brothers, R. Vikneswari, 28, and R. Elanggo, 30, and his cousin, B. Kalidass, 41, were accused of committing the offence at an abandoned hut in Jeram Mukim, Kampar KM1/2, Gua Tempurong here at 2pm.
The men were jointly charged under Section 39B(1)(a) of the Dangerous Drugs Act 1952 and punishable under Section 39B(2) of the same act, which carries the mandatory death penalty.
The charge was read out to them before magistrate Nurul Asyifa Redzuan.
Four women, believed to be their wives, and relatives were present. They were in tears and seen trying to console each other.
No plea was recorded, and no bail was offered. Nurul Asyifa fixed May 8 for mention, pending a chemist report.
The men were represented by Sukhdabe Singh Kashmir Singh, while deputy public prosecutor Nurul Azriah Said prosecuted.
Sukhdabe Singh sought the magistrate’s permission to transfer the accused to Sungai Buloh Prison in Selangor, close to where their families live.
Nurul Azriah said transferal processes were not under her purview but the Prisons Department’s.
“This is out of my jurisdiction. You have to write a letter to the Taiping Prisons Department director,” she said.
