Fa­ther of 7 charged with drug traf­fick­ing

KAM­PAR: A fa­ther of seven, along with three fam­ily mem­bers, are fac­ing the gal­lows for al­legedly traf­fick­ing in 14.6kg of metham­phetamine on March 13.

Kal­i­tazan@Nur Azan Ab­dul­lah, 44, his broth­ers, R. Vik­neswari, 28, and R. Elanggo, 30, and his cousin, B. Kal­i­dass, 41, were ac­cused of com­mit­ting the of­fence at an aban­doned hut in Jeram Mukim, Kam­par KM1/2, Gua Tem­purong here at 2pm.

The men were jointly charged un­der Sec­tion 39B(1)(a) of the Dan­ger­ous Drugs Act 1952 and pun­ish­able un­der Sec­tion 39B(2) of the same act, which car­ries the manda­tory death penalty.

The charge was read out to them be­fore mag­is­trate Nu­rul Asy­ifa Redzuan.

Four women, be­lieved to be their wives, and rel­a­tives were present. They were in tears and seen try­ing to con­sole each other.

No plea was recorded, and no bail was of­fered. Nu­rul Asy­ifa fixed May 8 for men­tion, pend­ing a chemist re­port.

The men were rep­re­sented by Sukhd­abe Singh Kash­mir Singh, while deputy pub­lic prose­cu­tor Nu­rul Azriah Said pros­e­cuted.

Sukhd­abe Singh sought the mag­is­trate’s per­mis­sion to trans­fer the ac­cused to Sun­gai Bu­loh Prison in Se­lan­gor, close to where their fam­i­lies live.

Nu­rul Azriah said trans­feral pro­cesses were not un­der her purview but the Pris­ons Depart­ment’s.

“This is out of my ju­ris­dic­tion. You have to write a let­ter to the Taip­ing Pris­ons Depart­ment direc­tor,” she said.
