71ST UMNO ANNIVERSARY RUN FLAGGED OFF
Show commitment to party and not those with own agendas, says Salleh
UMNO members should steer clear of the individualistic political culture to ensure the party’s progress. Umno treasurer Datuk Seri Salleh Said Keruak said history had shown that teamwork and unity at all levels were essential for the party to remain strong.
He said this included supporting the party’s leadership to facilitate its goal of serving the people and country.
“We must show our commitment to the party and not to individuals who have their own agendas.
“In this regard, we must support our leaders, namely party president Datuk Seri Najib Razak and Sabah Umno chief and Chief Minister Datuk Seri Musa Aman,” he said after flagging off participants of the 71st Umno Anniversary Run in Sepanggar here.
The run, held simultaneously nationwide in conjunction with Umno’s anniversary, carries the message to instil love for the party, he said.
Present were Karambunai assemblyman Datuk Jainab Ahmad Ayid, Sepanggar acting Umno division chief Datuk Yakub Khan and state Umno Youth chief Yamani Hafez Musa.
About 300 members from the three wings took part in the 12km run and cycling event that ended in Salut Tuaran.
Yamani, who is also the organising chairman of the state-level run, said the event would continue in Tuaran, Kota Belud and Kota Marudu before ending in Kudat, 190km away from here.
“Similar activities will also be held over the next few days involving 25 Umno divisions comprising Wanita, Puteri and Pemuda wings,” he said.
In Tumpat, Kelantan, some 3,000 members, who carried 71 party flags, took part in the run from Pengkalan Kubor to Pasir Putih. It was flagged off by acting Tumpat Umno division chief Datuk Mohd Rosdi Ab Aziz.
Rosdi said the large turnout by Kelantan Umno members was a strong display of unity and expressed hope that it would continue until the general election.
“This is the party’s wish,” he said, adding that about 1,000 members from Tumpat would travel to Kuala Lumpur to attend the anniversary celebration on May 11.
Kelantan Umno anniversary run spokesman Datuk Idris Mahmood said participants from Tumpat would hand over the flags to Umno members in Pasir Putih.
“In Pasir Putih, the flags will be handed over to our counterparts in Besut, Terengganu.
“The next leg will be held at Kampung Pachakan on May 4 and state Umno liasion committee chief Datuk Seri Mustapa Mohamed will hand over the flags to our Terengganu counterparts.”
