PEOPLE should give wala’ (loyalty) to their country’s leadership so as to uphold the government in a peaceful and harmonious manner.

Al-Azhar University deputy sheikh Sheikh Professor Dr Abbas Shuman said the people had a responsibility in expressing wala’ and obedience to their leaders.

He said love, cooperation and understanding were the main points in the wala’ concept, and even in a political organisation, members must be loyal to and abide by their legitimate leaders.

“Obedience means to adhere to all the instructions in any situation so long as they do not go against syara’ (Islamic law). But, they (instructions) should not be followed blindly without knowledge.
