‘Cops probing how suspect escaped from custody’
SHAH ALAM: Police are investigating how a hardcore criminal managed to escape from their patrol car after he was apprehended in Batu Caves yesterday.
In the 5.30am incident, police had responded to reports of a break-in at a warehouse and found the suspect, a 39-year-old convict, who was supposed to be serving his house detention sentence in Johor.
Gombak police chief Assistant Commissioner Ali Ahmad said initial investigations revealed that policemen had taken the suspect into custody.
Moments later, however, the man fled the scene by driving away a patrol car.
“The vehicle was found on Latar Highway near the exit to Guthrie Expressway half-an-hour later.
“A manhunt has been launched. Police are investigating how the suspect managed to escape and to determine whether there was negligence on the part of policemen.”
Ali said this at the Selangor police headquarters after attending a handing over of duties between Selangor Commercial Crime Investigation Department chief Senior Assistant Commissioner Mohd Sakri Arifin and his successor Assistant Commissioner Wan Rukman Wan Hassan.
“We have also opened investigation under Section 222 and 223 of the Penal Code to investigate the incident.”
