‘Cops prob­ing how sus­pect es­caped from cus­tody’

SHAH ALAM: Po­lice are in­ves­ti­gat­ing how a hard­core crim­i­nal man­aged to es­cape from their pa­trol car af­ter he was ap­pre­hended in Batu Caves yes­ter­day.

In the 5.30am in­ci­dent, po­lice had re­sponded to re­ports of a break-in at a ware­house and found the sus­pect, a 39-year-old con­vict, who was sup­posed to be serv­ing his house de­ten­tion sen­tence in Jo­hor.

Gom­bak po­lice chief As­sis­tant Com­mis­sioner Ali Ahmad said ini­tial in­ves­ti­ga­tions re­vealed that po­lice­men had taken the sus­pect into cus­tody.

Mo­ments later, how­ever, the man fled the scene by driv­ing away a pa­trol car.

“The ve­hi­cle was found on Latar High­way near the exit to Guthrie Ex­press­way half-an-hour later.

“A man­hunt has been launched. Po­lice are in­ves­ti­gat­ing how the sus­pect man­aged to es­cape and to de­ter­mine whether there was neg­li­gence on the part of po­lice­men.”

Ali said this at the Se­lan­gor po­lice head­quar­ters af­ter at­tend­ing a hand­ing over of du­ties be­tween Se­lan­gor Com­mer­cial Crime In­ves­ti­ga­tion Depart­ment chief Se­nior As­sis­tant Com­mis­sioner Mohd Sakri Arifin and his suc­ces­sor As­sis­tant Com­mis­sioner Wan Ruk­man Wan Has­san.

“We have also opened in­ves­ti­ga­tion un­der Sec­tion 222 and 223 of the Pe­nal Code to in­ves­ti­gate the in­ci­dent.”
