GRANDFATHER Salleh Ali is 80 years old but he was full of spirit to complete the Umno flag run from Kubang Kerian Umno building to Yayasan Kemiskinan Kelantan (YKK) complex in Melor, about 10km away, yesterday.

The former teacher from Kampung Dewan Beta was among 500 Kubang Kerian Umno members led by division chief Datuk Muhammad Abdul Ghani, who took part on the third day of the event, being held in conjunction with Umno’s 71st anniversary celebration this year.

“This is part of our struggle and I am full of spirit to do it. I want to encourage members, especially the younger generation, to work hard for the party,” he said.

Salleh said he joined the party when Tunku Abdul Rahman Putra Al-Haj was prime minister and Umno president, and would support the party through thick and thin.

Another party veteran, Noriah Din, 59, said she took part in the run to show support for the party.

Umno information chief Tan Sri Annuar Musa, who is also Ketereh Umno division chief, received the flag from Muhammad.

The event, held in conjunction with Umno’s 71st birthday, will continue from Ketereh to Pasir Putih today.

In Alor Star, the run kicked off in Kodiang yesterday and ends in Kulim today.

Some 500 runners took part in the division-to-division relay run covering 250km and crossing 15 Umno divisions in the state.

Yesterday, the flag made its way through Jerlun, Pokok Sena, Alor Star, Padang Terap and Kuala Kedah divisions in the morning, before travelling through Pendang and Sik, and coming to a stop in Jerai.

The second leg of the run today will cover Sungai Petani, Merbok, Baling, Kulim-Bandar Baharu and Padang Serai.

Menteri Besar Datuk Seri Ahmad Bashah Md Hanipah is slated to hand over the flag to Penang Umno chairman Datuk Seri Zainal Abidin Osman.

In Kuala Terengganu, state Umno executive secretary Razali Bidin said the party’s Youth and Puteri wings would spearhead the run as the northern zone flag arrives from Kelantan at Kampung Pachakan in Kuala Besut, today.

Razali said the run would drum up support for the mammoth gathering of 120,000 Umno members at Bukit Jalil on May 11.

State Agriculture and Agrobased Industries, Plantation Industry and Commodities Committee chairman Datuk Muhammad Pehimi Yusof, who is Jertih state assemblyman, will receive the flag in Kuala Besut.

In Tawau, Sabah Umno Youth treasurer Faez Nordin, who led 20 Umno members, said he had been on the road for more than 1,000km for the past three days.

“The convoy mostly covered asphalt road, but the weather was scorching, especially in Silam and Semporna, which we passed by at 3pm.

“But I don’t feel tired as this is a fight for us and a form of celebration for the party’s 71st anniversary,” he said. Additional reporting by Adrian David and Olivia Miwil
