MARANG: A breakthrough in Umno-Pas relations was achieved when Pas president Datuk Seri Abdul Hadi Awang attended a function organised by the Ministry of Agriculture and Agrobased Industry.

Greeted by Minister Datuk Seri Ahmad Shabery Cheek, Hadi, wearing a terendak, witnessed the signing of a Memorandum of Understanding between the Fisheries Department and Petronas.

Under the MoU, Petronas would dispose of its old oil rigs by fabricating them into artificial reefs and sinking them at strategic locations within Terengganu waters.

Shabery said Hadi’s presence was nostalgic and relived a memory 30 years ago when he met the Pas leader for the first time in Pulau Kapas and learned a lot about coastal fishing.

“He is a true fisherman. He knows where the fish are at sea, the type of fish and the technique to catch fish,” he added.

Shabery quipped that Hadi was among the first people to meet him when he assumed the post of Agricuture and Agro-based Minister.

“He (Hadi) had less interest in my portfolio when I was the Multimedia and Communications Minister,” he joked.
