COME Thursday, Bukit Jalil National Stadium will be a sea of red as some 140,000 people are expected to gather for Umno’s 71st anniversary celebration.

Umno executive secretary Datuk Seri Abdul Rauf Yusoh said red items of clothing would be handed out to attendees — the colour that reflects the party’s unity.

“This is the ‘original’ colour of unity, unlike those who are trying to ‘copy’ Umno’s originality,” said Rauf during a tour of the stadium that was at its tail-end of a rejuvenation process.

With the celebration just around the corner, Rauf said preparations were 75 per cent completed.

“Remaining preparations include decorations and technical finishes. Decorations will liven up the atmosphere in the stadium. We want to keep spirits high.”

Rauf said the celebration started on May 1 with a flag run, which began concurrently in all states, and will end on Thursday in Bukit Jalil.

“This is symbolic to promote unity within the party nationwide.

“It will show the party’s unity and togetherness under the Barisan Nasional government as the country heads closer towards the general election,” he said.

He said the celebration would also focus on small- and mediumscale industries, where business opportunities were offered to those who have signed up to operate stalls on Thursday.

“Small- and medium-scale industry entrepreneurs will have the opportunity to market and promote local products during the pre-celebration event organised by Media Prima Group, featuring the WOW Carnival at the stadium on Wednesday.”

Rauf said another significant difference the attendees would notice was the food and beverage section.

“We have decided to bring in 50 food trucks for the celebration to enlighten the public on the food quality and cleanliness of the food truck business,” he said.

As an added effort to draw in more people, Rauf said the highlight of the night would be a lucky draw, where six cars and 10 motorcycles would be given away, with the grand prize being a Proton Perdana.

“This lucky draw is only for Umno members who have registered as voters and are present at the celebration night.

“To participate in the lucky draw, they need to register online via the ‘Malaysia For All’ app.”

He said the main celebration night would feature the importance of upholding the party’s election machinery in facing the general election.

“We are hoping that the attendees that night will register themselves with the party as voters if they have not done so,” he said.

Apart from that, there will also be a career fair organised by Umno Youth as one of the featured highlights.

Applicants can bring their resumes for on-the-spot interviews where results of interviews will be revealed on Thursday itself.

Over 10,000 jobs would be offered at the career fair.
