2 charged over driving away Penang council lorry after raid

GEORGE TOWN: Two men, who drove away a Penang Island City Council lorry after local authoritie­s raided their food stall in Tanjung Tokong on Thursday, were yesterday charged with obstructin­g a civil servant from carrying out his duties.

Mohammad Haziq Ammar Mohd Hussain, 28, and Abdul Muhaimin Mohd Hassan, 34, pleaded not guilty to the charge read out to them before magistrate Mohamad Amin Shahul Hamid.

The two were accused of committing the offence by taking away the council lorry, which was parked in front of their stall near the Bagan Jermal fire station at 8.30pm on May 4.

The duo were charged under Section 186 of the Penal Code which carries a maximum two years’ jail, or fine up to RM10,000, or both upon conviction.

Amin, allowed bail for both accused at RM7,000 with one surety each and set July 4 for mention.

Deputy public prosecutor Nurul Fatim Hussain appeared for the prosecutio­n, while both accused were represente­d by M. Puveneswar­an.
