Viet­nam’s Xuan Vinh dashes na­tional shooter’s dream of two gold medals

OLYMPIAN Johnathan Wong came close to earn­ing a sweet dou­ble in the men’s 10m air pis­tol in­di­vid­ual at the South­east Asian (SEASA) Shoot­ing Cham­pi­onships yes­ter­day.

Johnathan gave Rio Olympic cham­pion Hoang Xuan Vinh of Viet­nam a run for his money in his favourite event.

He fought well but only man­aged a fi­nal round of 8.1 to set­tle for sil­ver with a to­tal of 233.2 points.

Xuan Vinh, who made Olympic his­tory by win­ning the air pis­tol event in Rio last year, amassed 10.3 in the fi­nal round to earn gold with 238.9.

Na­tional shooter Choo Wen Yan fin­ished third with 213.7 points but the bronze went to Sin­ga­pore’s Lim Swee Hon, who man­aged 195.1 un­der the onecoun­try one-medal rul­ing.

Johnathan, how­ever, still stood on top of the podium as he com­bined with Wen Yan and Eddy Chew to win the 10m air pis­tol team event.
