KUALA LUMPUR: The two-day Youth Expo 2017 at the Bukit Jalil National Stadium, held in conjunction with Umno’s 71st anniversary, saw jobseekers vying for more than 3,000 jobs yesterday.

Visitors flocked to the Northern Corridor Implementation Authority (NCIA) booth, which showcased micro-entrepreneurs from the northern region.

NCIA business development senior manager Juli Deri said instead of just providing jobs, NCIA also wanted to empower smalltime entrepreneurs by providing RM30,000 grants to help them expand their businesses.

“To date, we have approved 73 grants to small businesses in Perak, Perlis, Penang and Kedah, and we aim to approve another 200 for youth, especially those in the B40 category,” she said.

Drawing a lot of attention at the booth was labu sayung maker, Meor Amiruldin Aris, 34, who had been selling the traditional water containers for eight years in Kuala Kangsar.

Meor, who expanded his business in Sitiawan thanks to NCIA’s help, fascinated onlookers by shaping and decorating the labu sayung.

“Since I have the skills, NCIA taught me how to sell my labu sayung and helped me expand my business by owning a space to store my creations,” said Meor.

The event, organised by Umno Youth, aimed to develop and encourage youth to improve their lives.

The expo’s four components included jobs, affordable homes, skills training and funding.

Universiti Sultan Azlan Shah graduate Muhd Firdaus Azmi, 23, was one of the many fresh graduates who attended the event.

“What makes the expo excellent is that the job choices are diverse. I am happy that I got to apply for five jobs.”

Jobseekers interested in the Defence Ministry can apply at the Malaysian Armed Forces booth.

“We are looking for young talents with integrity who are willing to give their all to the job as it involves protecting the country,” said Armed Forces human resource officer Sergeant Nizamuddin Nasarudin.

“Our booth is not only to attract jobseekers, but also inform parents on the jobscopes offered by us.”

Hopefuls applying for jobs at the Youth Expo 2017 in Bukit Jalil National Stadium yesterday.
