JOHOR BARU: ONYX Hospitality Group, a leading hotel management group in Asia, has expanded its operations to Malaysia with the launch of the RM200 million Amari Hotel Johor Baru yesterday.

The hotel is set to complement Suasana Iskandar Malaysia, developed by UMLand, which forms an integral part of the city’s redevelopment and transformation programme.

With general manager Wayne Lunt at the helm, the 242-room hotel is located at Jalan Trus, which is a stone’s throw from the Persada Johor International Convention Centre, Komtar JBCC and the Customs, Immigration and Quarantine (CIQ) Complex.

ONYX president and chief operating officer Peter Henley said the hotel was the group’s first investment in Malaysia through the Amari brand, which had a strong presence in Thailand.

“We are proud to collaborate with UMLand in making Amari Johor Baru part of a heritagerich area surrounded by commercial buildings and shopping centres.

“The Amari Hotel is a shopping haven for guests, and a draw for tourists who wish to explore the hidden secrets and peculiarities of a city such as Johor Baru,” said Henley.

“The opening of the hotel is designed to cater to market demand, and tourism in a city undergoing rapid transformation is a current trend,” he added.
