Aus­tralian fa­ther, son killed in crash

ISKAN­DAR PU­TERI: A fa­ther and son from Aus­tralia were killed when the pickup truck they were in col­lided with a mul­ti­pur­pose ve­hi­cle at Km3.6 of the Sul­tan Iskan­dar High­way near Hori­zon Hills yes­ter­day.

Troy Justin Young­nickel, 45, a project di­rec­tor of a de­sign com­pany, and his 4-year-old son, Jai Ge­ofrey Roy, were killed at the scene in the 12.35pm ac­ci­dent.

Dis­trict po­lice chief As­sis­tant Com­mis­sioner Noor Hashim Mo­hamad said Young­nickel was be­lieved to have lost con­trol of the Toy­ota Hilux he was driv­ing from Jo­hor Baru to­wards Le­goland Malaysia.

He said the pickup truck crashed through the steel di­vider and col­lided with a Toy­ota Vell­fire.

“The driver and pas­sen­ger of the Hilux were pro­nounced dead at the scene by emer­gency med­i­cal per­son­nel.”

Noor Hashim said the driver and pas­sen­ger of the Vell­fire, two men aged 31 and 18, es­caped with mi­nor in­juries and were taken to Sul­tanah Ami­nah Hospi­tal.

“The bod­ies of the de­ceased were taken to the same hospi­tal for post-mortems,” he said, adding that six fire­men from the Iskan­dar Pu­teri sta­tion were despatched to the scene to ex­tri­cate the bod­ies of the Young­nick­els from their ve­hi­cle.
