Two claim trial to child abuse

JO­HOR BARU: A 55-year-old grand­mother and her 35-year-old son-in-law claimed trial to abus­ing her 13-year-old grand­daugh­ter at the mag­is­trate’s court here yes­ter­day.

They were al­leged to have in­flicted phys­i­cal in­jury on the child at a house in Ban­dar Baru Uda be­tween 2010 and May this year. They pleaded not guilty.

Coun­sel Mohd Shahid Abd Ma­lik, who rep­re­sented the grand­mother, upon ap­peal­ing for a low bail said: “My client is an old woman who has been de­serted by her hus­band and is mak­ing her liv­ing by help­ing a friend sell nasi lemak. She earns RM500 a month.”

He said she also had a 16-year-old youth un­der her care.

Mag­is­trate Noor Aisyah Ah­mad set bail at RM5,000 for the grand­mother and RM8,000 for her son-in-law pend­ing men­tion on July 10.
