A pistol, believed to be the weapon used in the murder, was seized while the suspect was taken to the Serian district police station for further investigation.

Sarawak Police Commissioner Datuk Mazlan Mansor confirmed the arrest and said the case was being investigated under Section 302 of the Penal Code.

The victim identified as Siti Nadirah Abdullah, 33, had married the suspect last year.

She was shot dead at her home in Kampung Kakai at 3.15pm.

The victim’s 62-year-old mother, who rushed into the room after hearing the gunshots, said she could not believe her eyes when she saw her daughter’s body.

“She was lying in a pool of blood with gunshot wounds on her forehead and neck,” she said at Serian Hospital here.

“I never expected him to do this to his wife, who was two months pregnant,” she said.

The woman, who only wanted to be identified as Niah, said her son-in-law later fled the scene by driving off in his car.

Niah said her son-in-law was attached to the Belaga district police station.

“He was attending a training session in Kuching and that is why they (the couple) came over to stay in my house.

“He came home and went into their room as per usual.

“Then I suddenly heard the gunshots.

“I don’t know what happened as they never quarrelled.

“I don’t know what prompted him to shoot his wife,” Niah said.

It is learnt that the victim was a housewife and had two children from her previous marriage.
