China shoot down Malaysia in playoff

New Straits Times - - Sport -

CHINA denied Malaysia’s women's recurve archers a team bronze medal at the World Cup in Shanghai yesterday after winning the playoff 6-0.

Although the national trio of Nur Aliya Ghapar, Nur Afisa Abdul Halil and Loke Shin Hui failed to make the podium, fourth place still represented the best finish by a Malaysian women's team at a World Cup.

Nerves appeared to get the better of the Malaysians as they shot a five and a six in the opening set which China won 56-47 and also struggled for consistency in the second set which China took 55-49.

China's trio of Cui Yuanyuan, Lan Lu and Qi Yuhong swept the third set 58-54 to clinch the bronze medal.

Russia defeated the United States 6-2 for the gold medal.

The performance of the national women archers, who have lived in the shadows of their men counterparts, augurs well for the Kuala Lumpur Sea Games.

Two gold medals have been targeted from the recurve events as Malaysia seek to emulate or better their five-gold performance at the 2015 Sea Games in Singapore.
