Newlands needs safety cert to host Championship
JOHANNESBURG: South Africa will host greatest rugby rivals New Zealand in Cape Town on Oct 7 in the Rugby Championship, but the venue has to be confirmed.
The first-choice stadium, Newlands, needs a safety certificate to stage one of the biggest Test crowd-pullers, a South African Rugby (SAR) statement said on Monday.
Cape Town Stadium, built for the 2010 football World Cup with Table Mountain as a backdrop, is the probable alternative venue. New Zealand last played in Cape Town nine years ago and triumphed 19-0 at Newlands in a match notable for All Blacks icon Dan Carter reaching 800 Test points.
The Springboks host Argentina in Port Elizabeth on Aug 19 and Australia in Bloemfontein on Sept 30 in other Rugby Championship home fixtures.
South Africa launch their season with a three-Test home series against France during June in Pretoria, Durban and Johannesburg.
