Hooper also directed this epic musical drama, adapted from a popular West End musical which was based on the 1862 French novel by Victor Hugo. The film, set in 19th century France, follows the story of a former convict, hunted mercilessly by a policeman, who agrees to care for a factory worker’s young daughter.

Bonham Carter, who plays the smarmy Madame Thenardier in this film and Mrs Lovett (Sweeney Todd), mirrors Jenny Galloway, the original Madame Thenardier, who had played both roles in the theatrical productions.
