Barcelona not good enough for Vinicius
MADRID: Vinicius Junior chose Real Madrid over Barcelona despite the Catalans offering a better payday, according to the wonderkid’s representative Frederico Pena.
The 16-year-old Brazilian has been signed by Real in a £38 million (RM209 million) deal from Flamengo, though he may well stay in his home country until 2019.
The astonishing deal has grabbed the headlines across the football world — with Pena pointing out how critics are calling the numbers involved ‘madness’ — but now it has emerged that Vinicius turned down more money at Barca because he preferred Real’s ‘project’.
“If anyone receives criticism, it will be Real Madrid for the bet they have made,” Pena said.
“For them, they are assured it will work. There were other clubs interested and one offered more money.
“Barcelona put together a more lucrative package for the player.
“Many believe that it is madness (what Real Madrid are doing) but they were not the only ones involved in the supposed madness. They are not the only crazy ones willing to pay for the quality of Vinicius.”
Asked why Vinicius turned down Barcelona, Pena said: “Vinicius liked the project at Real Madrid more.
“People get the impression that he made the decision based on financial situation but it’s not the truth. I assure, the negotiating stance that Real Madrid took was better.”
Vinicius had previously suggested that his ultimate destination was not down to him.
“It was not me that decided anything, it was my representatives together with Flamengo and my parents,” he told Fox Sports.
