ACONTROVERSY has marred the eagerly awaited Unduk Ngadau or beauty pageant for the two-day state-level Kaamatan Festival which starts in Penampang today.

A mix-up over the results of the district-level pageant in Banggi, reportedly caused by a drunk emcee who wrongly announced the winner, has prompted the organisers to not register any contestants from the area.

In the contest on May 21, Lusilah Retni Lim, 23, was announced as the Banggi winner but four days later, one of the finalists, Erlasttini Ernie Bidi, claimed she won the pageant, one of the main events in the harvest festival.

Both Lusilah and Erlasttini turned up to register as the Banggi representative for the state-level contest over the weekend here.

Instead they were told the district has been disqualified because of the mix-up in the results.

Each year, the main winner at the district-level Unduk Ngadau earns a slot in the state-level contest. This year, 44 contestants from across the state will be vying for the much coveted title.

The pageant is one of the highlights of the Kaamatan festival that will be held at the Kadazandusun Cultural Association grounds, also known as Hongkod Koisaan, which means a place of unity.

Unduk Ngadau organising committee chairman, Joanna Kitingan, yesterday said the committee had met the Banggi Unduk Ngadau coordinator and the two contestants to discuss the matter.

Joanna said the committee, however, was not able to contact the said emcee.

“The decision to disqualify Banggi was made because the problem should have been resolved at the district level.”

She also ticked off the organisers for allowing the drunk emcee to announce the results.

“They should have let the head judge announce the results instead.”
