-

An unemployed man was yesterday sentenced by the magistrate’s court to 20 months’ jail and two strokes of the rotan for cheating.

Chong Ken Hoon, 34, was also fined RM9,000 in default four months’ jail.

He pleaded guilty to cheating Yeo Chun Jie, 33, of almost RM100,000, which was supposed to be payment for 267 mobile phones.

He admitted to committing the offence at Taman Yulek i n Cheras, near here on March 18 last year by failing to transfer RM72,392 into MPS Telecommu- nication Sdn Bhd’s account via Maybank2U.com as payment for the mobile phones, which resulted in the company suffering losses of RM99,992.

Counsel P.G. Cyril, in mitigating for a lenient sentence, told magistrate Rahni Kartini Abd Rahim that his client was looking after his mother and has an elder sister.

“My client is a bankrupt, regrets his action and his mother had paid RM15,000 to the company. He is a first-time offender.”

Deputy public prosecutor Aftal Mariz Mohamed urged the court to take public interest into consideration.
