Man gets 20 months’ jail, two strokes of rotan for cheat­ing offence

An un­em­ployed man was yes­ter­day sen­tenced by the mag­is­trate’s court to 20 months’ jail and two strokes of the rotan for cheat­ing.

Chong Ken Hoon, 34, was also fined RM9,000 in de­fault four months’ jail.

He pleaded guilty to cheat­ing Yeo Chun Jie, 33, of al­most RM100,000, which was sup­posed to be pay­ment for 267 mo­bile phones.

He ad­mit­ted to com­mit­ting the offence at Ta­man Yulek i n Cheras, near here on March 18 last year by fail­ing to trans­fer RM72,392 into MPS Telecommu- nica­tion Sdn Bhd’s ac­count via May­ as pay­ment for the mo­bile phones, which re­sulted in the com­pany suf­fer­ing losses of RM99,992.

Coun­sel P.G. Cyril, in mit­i­gat­ing for a le­nient sen­tence, told mag­is­trate Rahni Kar­tini Abd Rahim that his client was look­ing af­ter his mother and has an elder sis­ter.

“My client is a bank­rupt, re­grets his ac­tion and his mother had paid RM15,000 to the com­pany. He is a first-time of­fender.”

Deputy pub­lic pros­e­cu­tor Af­tal Mariz Mo­hamed urged the court to take pub­lic in­ter­est into con­sid­er­a­tion.
