Four Kan­gar pupils hos­pi­talised after mer­cury spill at school lab

KAN­GAR: Twelve pupils from SK Be­hor Mali here were rushed to the Sim­pang Em­pat Clinic fol­low­ing a mer­cury spill at the school’s lab­o­ra­tory yes­ter­day.

Four of the pupils, aged 11, were later rushed to Tuanku Fauziah Hos­pi­tal after they com­plained of headache and vom­it­ing.

State Health di­rec­tor Dr Zaini Hussin said the four were suf­fer­ing headaches due to ex­po­sure to the mer­cury.

They were in sta­ble con­di­tion at the hos­pi­tal, he added.

“The pupils are un­der ob­ser­va­tion.”

Perlis Fire and Res­cue Depart­ment as­sis­tant di­rec­tor (op­er­a­tion) Muham­mad Fir­daus Yu­sop said they re­ceived a dis­tress call at 12.56pm.

“A team of four men took about an hour to clean up the mer­cury on a lab ta­ble.

“The op­er­a­tion was com­pleted at 2.57pm.”


A mer­cury spill was re­ported at SK Be­hor Mali in Kan­gar yes­ter­day.
