VISITORS to Teluk Chempedak in Kuantan are not happy to learn that the public parking area at the scenic tourist spot is no longer free for those with Kuantan Municipal Council (MPK) monthly and yearly parking passes.

A frequent beach-goer, who wanted to be known only as Aisyah, said she was shocked when she was charged RM2.10 for parking her car at the Teluk Chempedak public parking area.

“Previously, I did not have to pay for parking as I had the MPK monthly parking pass. Then, I saw the notice at the entrance to the parking area stating the new parking rates,” she said yesterday.

Alim Badri Hisham, 56, hoped that MPK would rescind the new policy and reinstate the old parking payment system.

“The payment (for MPK yearly or monthly sticker and parking space) was introduced by MPK. It is like being charged twice for parking.”

A spokesman for MPK said the new payment system was implemented on July 1 and that announcements had been made about it.

“Previously, even those with MPK parking stickers were required to pay, but we exempted them (from paying).

“However, (since July 1), a new system has been put in place that is applicable to all Teluk Chempedak visitors who use the parking area (regardless of whether they have the yearly or monthly MPK parking passes),” he said.

The holders of MPK yearly and monthly parking passes may park in all public parking areas in Kuantan such as near shops and banks.

The public parking area in Teluk Chempedak, Kuantan, is no longer free for visitors who have Kuantan Municipal Council monthly and yearly parking passes.
