GURUN: The delay in the departure of pilgrims to the Holy Land has been reduced significantly over the past week following the intervention from the Embassy of Saudi Arabia in Malaysia to speed up the process.

Minister in the Prime Minister’s Department Datuk Seri Jamil Khir Baharom said the government-formed task force was working with the embassy, adding that the process was much smoother as compared with the flights last month.

“The Saudi Arabian government is aware of the situation and their embassy has issued an order to expedite the process.

“Thanks to their cooperation, we have significantly reduced the delay in approving visa for our pilgrims.”

He said the delay would be further reduced before the final flights on Aug 26, adding that Tabung Haji had been updating affected pilgrims daily.

He said some 50 per cent of the 30,000 pilgrims had already departed for the Holy Land, adding that he was confident that the remaining pilgrims would depart for their haj on time.
