Ama­zon, Ten­cent back­ing for Es­sen­tial

Es­sen­tial Prod­ucts, the smart­phone startup founded by a co-cre­ator of the An­droid mo­bile op­er­at­ing sys­tem, has raised US$300 mil­lion (RM1.28 bil­lion) in new fund­ing and signed up re­tail­ers to sell its first de­vice. Re­tail­ers in­cluded Best Buy, Ama­zon.com and car­ri­ers Sprint Corp in the United States and Telus Corp in Canada, said Es­sen­tial. Strate­gic in­vestors in­cluded Ten­cent Hold­ings Ltd , con­tract man­u­fac­turer Fox­conn and Ama­zon, which par­tic­i­pated via its Alexa Fund.
