PM CONVEYS CONDOLENCE­S

DPM also extends condolence­s to royal family and people of Kedah

DATUK Seri Najib Razak expressed his condolence­s over the passing of Sultan of Kedah Tuanku Abdul Halim Muadzam Shah.

Najib, who held a press conference at the Trump Internatio­nal Hotel shortly after arriving for a three-day visit here, said he received news of Tuanku Abdul Halim’s passing on the way to Washington.

Najib said he was saddened by the news as he shared many memories with him.

“He was exemplary and a role model as an Agong in terms of his commitment in carrying out all his royal duties,” he said.

Tuanku Abdul Halim was twice made Agong from 1970 to 1975 and from 2011 to 2016.

The first stint was when Najib’s father, Tun Abdul Razak Hussein, was prime minister and the second, during Najib’s tenure.

Najib said Tuanku Abdul Halim’s deeds in shaping Malaysia into a modern, progressiv­e and dynamic country would be recorded in the annals of history.

Najib said Tuanku Abdul Halim’s first stint as Agong saw him being part of the democratic process post May 13, 1969.

Tuanku Abdul Halim also played a pivotal role in nation building under the New Economic Policy.

His second stint saw him contributi­ng greatly to turning Malaysia into a dynamic and progressiv­e nation.

In posts on his Twitter and Facebook accounts, Najib said Sultan Abdul Halim and he had a close and cordial relationsh­ip, both in an official and personal capacity.

“Inna lilla hiwa inn ailaihiroj­iun.I am most saddened by the news of the demise of Tuanku a while ago.

“In my personal capacity and on behalf of the Federal Government, with grief, I express my condolence­s to the royal family of Kedah.

“May the Almighty bless his soul and place him among the righteous. Al-Fatihah.”

Meanwhile, Bernama reports Deputy Prime Minister Datuk Seri Dr Ahmad Zahid Hamidi expressed his condolence­s to the royal family and the people of Kedah.

“May the soul of Tuanku be blessed by the Almighty. Al-Fatihah,” he said a tweet.

Communicat­ions and Multimedia Minister Datuk Seri Salleh Said Keruak, also in a tweet, expressed his condolence­s over the demise of Sultan Abdul Halim.

“May the soul of Tuanku be blessed by the Almighty. Al-Fatihah.”
