Nazri: It’s public’s right to question Mukhriz’s source of wealth

New Straits Times - - News -

UMNO Supreme Council member Datuk Seri Nazri Aziz yesterday has reminded Parti Pribumi Bersatu Malaysia deputy president Datuk Seri Mukhriz Mahathir of his position as a public figure.

Nazri said due to Mukhriz’s status in the political landscape, it would not be wise for the latter to question why the people and mainstream media were asking about his family’s wealth.

He said this was because the public had the right to question a political figure’s source of wealth.

“When you become a public figure, people have the right to know where your wealth comes from. So don’t pretend like you want to fight for the poor and such.

“What’s wrong with flaunting your wealth as long as the source of the wealth is halal?

“Religion doesn’t say it’s wrong for its followers to chase after wealth as long as it is done through halal ways. You’re

scared, aren’t you?” he said during a media conference at the Parliament building on Tuesday.

The tourism and culture minister told Mukhriz to not practise double standard when it came to the media, regardless it was mainstream or alternative media.

He said if the non-mainstream media could question and expose the wealth of government officials and ministers, the mainstream media too could do the same to public figures.

“Don’t (practise) double standard. We also want to know where the wealth comes from.

“I asked Dr Mahathir many times how his children could be so rich... it’s not like they were good at doing business anyway,” he said, referring to Mukhriz’s father, who is also Pakatan Harapan chairman, Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad.

Mukhriz on Monday criticised newspapers for publishing photos from social media of his daughters Meera Alyanna and Melia Serena, who allegedly displayed the family’s wealth.

The former Kedah menteri besar had asked about the need for the people to question the source of his family’s riches, adding that his family had never stole money or obtained it from ill-gotten gains. On Sunday, Malay and Chinese dailies published reports purportedly of Mukhriz’s daughters’ lavish lifestyles, along with pictures of one of his daughters on a private boat named Puteri Alyanna.
