Fitness friends forever

II’d like to take a minute to pay tribute to my workout buddies. They are, according to our article on page 16, key to maximising your workouts, and, in my opinion, the biggest motivation boosters. They get me out of the door, doing something active almost daily. Let’s start with the ladies, and the occasional male, who pump iron, and slay the metcon moves with me at the gym. I’m there 90% of the time because they’re there. I’ve moved gyms because of them, skipped night-before drinks because I want to be there at 6.30am to work out with them, and I’ve pushed harder during a circuit because I’m trying my best to keep up with them. When I occasionally skip the morning sesh, I feel like I’ve disappointed them. My walking/running/ step-climbing buddies also motivate me to do better. If my walking friend doesn’t show up, I don’t go. If they don’t cajole me to complete another flight of stairs, I won’t do it. If they don’t urge me to step up my speed, I’ll just stroll. If it weren’t for them, my cardio fitness would be at loser level. I’ve got a long way to go before I can call myself cardio-fit but because of them, I’m better at it every day. And then there’s my hiking group. For this gang, I seem to be the ‘organiser’; I ask midweek where we’re hiking over the weekend, research new trails, set push-off times and nag them about packing the necessary stuff. I’d like to think that some of my drill-master antics have rubbed off, but they’ve taught me how to enjoy the trails, know when to quit, and when to push on, how to laugh when I’m grunting on a climb and pace myself on the downhills. My hikes are like mini holidays because of them, and I take one almost every weekend. So find a fitness friend, SHAPE-ers or tell us about yours on Instagram and we’ll tell your story.
