Unidentified man’s body found in sea, another man feared drowned

KOTA KINABALU: Police are seeking public assistance to identify a man whose body was found in the sea off Pulau Gaya here yesterday morning.

City police chief ACP M. Chandra said the man who had a tattoo on his back was clad in a red t-shirt but no identification documents were found on him.

The body was spotted floating near the jetty serving the two schools on the island about 6.45am.

“The man had his left arm on a life ring. It did not bear any labels, number or names. When the police based on Pulau Gaya responded to a report of a body found in the sea, they recovered it and after bringing it ashore, they believed that it was a drowning victim,” Chandra said.

The remains have been sent to the Queen Elizabeth Hospital for post-mortem to determine the cause of death, he added.

“We are hoping that anyone who knows the deceased or his family members can come forward to the nearest police station to facilitate investigations. Alternatively they can call the investigation officer, ASP Zulfikar Abdul Salam at 019800 9455,” said Chandra.

Meanwhile, a 37-year-old man was reported missing and feared drowned while having a swim in the waters off Kuala Pamaguan in Sandakan on Sunday.

Sandakan Fire and Rescue Department chief Razali Awang Ahmad said the victim, identified as Sharian Amirshah from Sungai Manila, had gone to Kuala Pamaguan with five friends for a picnic and a swim.

Razali said the department rushed to the scene upon receiving a distress call from the Malaysian Maritime Enforcement Agency at 10.03pm on Sunday.

The search and rescue operation was activated yesterday to search for the victim within 40 nautical miles from the place he was reported missing.

He was still missing at press time.
