KOTA KINABALU: A fire at Kampung Samparita Tengah in Kota Marudu on Sunday night claimed the life of a 69-year-old man.

Kota Marudu district police chief Superintendent Mohd Izaan Abdullah said the deceased had been identified as Yaad @ Abd Shaad bin Enggok.

He was believed to have been asleep when the fire broke out and as it spread very quickly, Yaad was not able to escape, Mohd Izaan disclosed.

A report on the tragic incident was reported by Yaad’s younger brother Gutikah who lives in Kampung Samparita Pusat.

“At about 8.10pm om Sept 10, Gutikah, 54 was informed that his brother Yaad’s house was on fire. Together with fellow villagers, Gutikah rushed to the scene but when they arrived there, the house was already gutted.

“Gutikah searched through the burnt down structure and found his brother’s remains. He then lodged a report with the police,” Mohd Izaan added.

He said Yaad’s remains were later taken to the Kota Marudu district hospital for post-mortem and the cause of the fire was still under investigation.
